Podcast Favorites

Podcasts have been taking over radio and its listenership continues to grow while becoming a more popular medium, especially for advertisement. Similar to radio, it ranges from comedy to sports to education. iTunes is marketing the medium tremendously, similarly to music, allowing easy download access. And even better, it's free.

The B.S. Report

The B.S. Report is a ESPN podcast hosted by Bill Simmons. It's a marquee cornerstone to the Grantland network, a separate publication website created by Simmons with ESPN that combines sports and pop culture. Simmons also has a comedic side, as he was once a writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! He's a good interviewer and connects with both his sports-loving colleagues, comedians and movie stars. He recently had numerous contacts on the 2013 NBA draft with impressive in-depth analysis. TV stars like Bill Hader, Anthony Jesselnik and Jon Hamm. It's established itself as a well- known podcast since its creation in 2007.

Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast

Bill Murr is a rising star in the comedic world, much thanks to his weekly podcast. Begun in May 2007, Burr's is the only comedic podcast of notoriety that is just one person performing without a sidekick or guest. He talks about current events and sports in a funny, opinionated monologue, and answers listeners' emails with practical, usually positive, advice with a comedic twist. In particular, he loves to make fun of fat people and weight gain while also trying to inspire people to lose weight. He's finally gaining mainstream success for his talents and will hopefully continue releasing a weekly podcast for everyone to enjoy.

You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes & The Nerdist Podcast

Nerdist Industries creator Chris Hardwick has formed a podcast empire, two staples being You Made It Weird and Hardwick's own Nerdist Podcast that he hosts with two sidekicks. Pete Holmes, on the other hand, conducts his podcast one-on-one interview style, mostly with comics of his contemporary. He is another rising star in the comedic world, having not yet achieved the recognition of Bill Burr, but is well on his way to mainstream success.

Writing Specific:

On The Page: Screenwriting

Hosted by Pilar Allesandra, it's an open dialogue about different aspects of writing in show business. Whether it be about writing for a late night show with guests from Conan Obrien's late night show or a professional talking candidly about subjects such agents and managers, even the experience of moving out to Los Angeles. Alessandra brings a warm, friendly spirit that's upbeat and helpful for an aspiring writer.

Nerdist Writers Panel

Another established podcast from Nerdist Industries, Ben Blacker hosts an informal chat with writers from across the medium. He asks intelligent questions and lets the guest respond in a reflective, in-depth analysis and can joke around just as well. Notable guests range from Marlon Wayans to Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad. Blacker connects with each guest well and establishes a comfortable, relaxed setting.

Honorable Mention:

WTF with Marc Maron & Comedy Bang Bang: The Podcast

A bi-weekly podcast, Marc Maron holds an interview style conversation similar to Pete Holmes, except Maron is the original. Maron discusses comedy but usually delves into deeper discussions that can get very personal. Jonah Hill, a recent guest of his, recently compared him to Howard Stern.
Host Scott Aukerman established his own podcast network, similar to Nerdist Industries, called Earwolf. It usually features more than one guest per episode, with constant clever joking and hilarious banter. Each personality plays off one another which keeps the listener engaged, almost feeling like they're sitting in.

60 Minutes

CBS presents the classic program into a podcast version. Already a name brand, the show could do nothing but flourish, and even reach out to a wider audience. The information is so interesting and combined with hard-working journalists, it's hard to not listen all the way through. Also educational, the stories provide a variety of domestic and worldly subjects that go in depth to fully explain to and inform the listener.
