Box Office Busts: Summer 2013

The Summer of 2013 was full of franchise-hopeful, box office booming flicks in an attempt to attract a wide range of audiences. There were some highly successful films like Despicable Me 2, Man Of Steel, and Monsters University. But many with high budgets didn't quite pan out like expected.

The Lone Ranger

With a budget of  $215 million, this film seemed doom from the start. The commercials seemed unsuccessful in connecting with viewers even with a star like Johnny Depp. It amassed less than $30 million over it's opening weekend, a huge disappointment for Disney, who is desperately trying to start another lucrative franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is soon to come out, however, which is guaranteed to make Disney so much money it could even make up for this bomb. It made just over $84 million domestically and $150,512,000 worldwide, not even coming close to its budget.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim had high expectations with a popular director in Guillermo Del Toro, but was another failed attempt to bring in enough money. Even with a 3D feature it only brought in $78,661,00 domestically and just over $110,000,000 worldwide, significantly under its $190 million budget. On opening weekend it lost to Adam Sandler's ensemble cast sequel Grown Ups 2. Grown Ups 2.
